A Visit to Viña Vik
A visit to Viña Vik is like being on set in a futuristic James Bond movie.
The setting is spectacular, with its undulating titanium roof property at the top of a majestic hill and views of the Andes and Millahue Valley 360° around…And knowing that they practically moved the mountain to build it is mind blowing. Alex and Carrie Vik have a singular vision, to make a First Growth Bordeaux-level wine in Chile. They’ve spared no expense, from hacking back the jungle to plant the vineyards to designing a state of the art winery where no detail was not considered to constructing their own barrels and toasting with native wood.
The hotel and the property, like their hotel in Milan, is a celebration of global artists and artisans, some of whom are also featured on their wine labels. Fruits and vegetables from their organic garden are featured in the restaurant—Such a lovely way to showcase the estate wines and the unique terroir from which they come.
We arrived many hours later than planned, to my dismay. We had learned the Viks were in town and were very excited that it coincided with our visit. It was after 11pm and we had missed dinner but our new friend Jamie was waiting up with bottles of Piu Belle rosé and tinto and two lovely late night salads that we enjoyed outside in the warm Chilean night air. It was hard to leave my suite the next morning, but worth it to walk the vineyards with winemaker Cristián Vallejo. His passion is so vivid as he speaks of his quest to make ever greater wines. That night we dined with Carrie, Alex and the team, enjoying vintage after vintage of their acclaimed reds. If you ever visit Chile, this property is a must.
We look forward to welcoming Alex and Carrie Vik back to Nantucket for the Nantucket Wine Festival and sharing their wines at Current Vintage Friday, May 19 3:30-5. Aurelio Montes Sr. From Viña Montes will also be there. Don’t miss this one!
