Tasting Wines…



2009 Chardonnay, $115


Brilliant, shiny yellow gold with hints of white gold on the rim.


Explosion of pear, quince, vanilla, butter and granite, balanced with touches of white truffles, exotic fruits and Cajun nuts.


Fresh entrance evolving quickly on minerality, quinine, grapefruit and blood orange, lingering on vanilla ice cream and crème brûlée.

Suggested Pairing:

Roast chicken with shiitake bread pudding

2009 Terra di Monteverro, $75


Deep, black cherry with a touch of a bright, shiny red.


Fresh herbs like thyme and rosemary with hints of mint, blueberries,

pickled cherry, prune, tobacco leaves and cured meat.


Soft, yet vibrant entrance evolving on a framed mouthfeel with

blackberries and blueberries, lingering on chocolate covered cherries.

Suggested Pairing:

Herbed Berkshire pork chop

2009 Monteverro $150


Deep, dark and intense black with bright red and purple on the rim.

ON THE NOSE: Concentrated aromas with spices like white pepper, sap, chocolate and cedar wood with hints of cherry, jasmine, tea leaves, black currant and cigar box.

ON THE PALATE: Powerful, yet subtle entrance on a layered structure with a great backbone of acidity, lingering on cherry, cassis and dark chocolate with dense but ripe tannins, coated with blackberry jam.

Suggested Pairing:

Ossobucco & Polenta


VEUVE CLICQUOT Champagne Tasting:

Yellow Label NV, $56

The strength of this golden-yellow wine is immediately pleasing to the nose while its complexity explodes on the palate.  The initial notes of fruit are followed by more discreet aromas of brioche and vanilla when the wine is allowed to age in the bottle.  Brut Carte Jaune offers a perfect balance of finesse and forcefulness.

Brut Rosé NV, $66

It offers the eye radiant color, its nose is intense and elegant.  Notes of raspberry, wild strawberry and cherry predominate, followed by a touch of dried fruits and pastry.  In the mouth, the attack is powerful, leaving behind a harmony of fruits.  Elegant and sensual, the wine offers exceptional balance and surprising intensity.

La Grande Dame 2004, $175

On the palate, there is plenty of body and substance.  The texture is crisp and silky. The chalky mineral note resonates magnificently with this full-bodied structure and intensifies the lengthy persistence.  The Verzenay/Avize duet (the two dominant crus in this blend of 8 grand crus) takes on its full dimension.  The finish is fresh and generous, indicating a light dosage that does nothing to disturb the wine’s natural balance.



“Blueline wines develop deeply concentrated fruit characteristics in a range of dark red (dark sour cherry, dried cranberry, candied raspberry in Merlot) to black fruit (blackberry, cassis, and fig in Cabernet and Cabernet Franc). The density of these wines is intense, with explosive flavors and lingering finishes-what we like to call wide, mouth-coating yum! The unique riverbed soils deliver a spicy aromatic and a mineral laced zesty brightness to balance the deep fruit concentration. The layers and complexity can all be traced back to Blueline Vineyard’s terroir: the inimitable mix of geography and climate that have converged here, putting its indelible stamp on the personality of our wines.”–HOURGLASS

Blueline Vineyard Cabernet Franc 2010

81% Cabernet Franc, 4.5% each Cabernet Sauvignon & Petit Verdot.

On the palate, this Cab Franc is highly structured, yet deep in rich flavors of cassis, dark cherry, bay leaf, pipe tobacco and ripe plum.  Good acidity and firm tannins frame the lush dark fruit and provide a clearly delineated texture – a hint of its great aging potential.

This is the fifth vintage release of the Cab Franc and possibly the best to date…

Blueline Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon 2009, $130

Earth, spicy mint, black licorice, eucalyptus and cassis intermingle with toasted espresso to elicit a haunting aromatic.  Brooding and dark in aroma, the flavors come alive on the palette, woven together by good natural acidity.  The acidity (a hallmark of Hourglass) provides structure and lift to the darker cassis and rich black fruit flavors, by adding a layer of tangy red fruits (pomegranate and red cassis). Seamless integration from start to finish is a function of polished ripe tannin from the long, even 2009 growing season, which delivers a silky texture and lingering finish.

Monteverro is a new Italian winery from  southern Tuscany’s Maremma appellation which is heralding a new age of Super Tuscans.  Their debut in 2011 with the 2008 Bordeaux blends and a superb Chardonnay was critically acclaimed by wine media worldwide with 95+ratings in all major publications!  Meet winemaker Matthieu Taunay and taste the Monteverro Chardonnay, Terra di Monteverro and iconic Monteverro wines paired with Tuscan Chef Cesare Casella’s salumi…

Cesare, best known as the chef with the rosemary, is Chef-Owner of Salumeria Rosi Parmacotto & Salumeria Rosi Il Ristorante in NYC.  He is rarely without a small bouquet springing from his jacket pocket, a signature that represents his dedication to fresh ingredients, his herb-inflected cuisine and his childhood in the Tuscan countryside where rosemary grew wild and his family ran a small trattoria, Vipore, outside of Lucca.  Cesare is also Dean of Italian Studies at the International Culinary Center and serves as Chief of the Department of Nourishment Arts at the Center for Discovery, where he is devoted to raising awareness about sustainability and nutrition.  Here is a great piece on Chef Casella just published in Wine Enthusiast magazine…We are positively thrilled to have Cesare join us again this year at currentVintage!

This year’s trio may be the best ever!! I mean, if Chateau Angelus is within your means, by all means, do not miss this experience. We had so much fun with Angelus partner Jean-Bernard Grenie in Bordeaux and he is a delight to dine with…Super charming, great laugh and always with a twinkle in his eye. And, the wines are all rated 93-98 by Robert Parker.  I dined at beautiful Bistro du Midi in April and it is certainly a ‘Best of Boston’.

If you want to get in the spirit for the Penner-Ash tasting, perhaps pick up a bottle of Penner-Ash Viognier from cV–Even better, get two–one to drink and the other to take with you to the seminar and have Lynn Penner-Ash sign it!  The wines are fabulous…

Their recently elevated status makes Angelus one of four estates with the top St-Emilion classification.

Chef Robert Sisca is a two-time nominee for Food & Wine magazine’s “Best New Chef” 2011 and 2012 and received three stars from The Boston Globe. He was recently named best “Chef, Up and Coming” in Boston Magazine’s anticipated “Best of Boston” issue.

Featured wines of the evening will include La Fleur de Boüard 2005, Château Angélus 2006, Château Angélus 2004 and Château Angélus 2005.

It’s no secret I am a huge fan of Cesare Casella–I have written about him many times in our newsletter and plugged his newest restaurant on  I can’t help it…His food is amazing and Salumeria Rosi Il Ristorante on the UES is about the chicest place you’ll ever set foot in.  He is indeed a luminary among luminaries at the Nantucket Wine Festival but he is also a wonderful person and very dear friend, which is how we are so fortunate to have him pair his Tuscan salumi with our wine & champagne tastings this Friday.  You can also find him at the NWF Thursday Night Gala, NWF Charitable Auction and the Sunday Boarding House Bourbon Bash.

We look forward to this week so much each year…it’s a nonstop toast to old friends and new…
